If you're looking for the perfect way to experience the charm of Cape Cod, a stroll along the Sandwich Boardwalk should be at the top of your list. Nestled right in the heart of Sandwich, Massachusetts, this iconic boardwalk has been a favorite for both locals and visitors for generations. Whether you're soaking in the stunning marsh views, feeling the ocean breeze on your face, or simply looking for a peaceful getaway, this spot offers the ultimate Cape Cod experience.

A Little History Behind the Boardwalk

The Sandwich Boardwalk isn’t just a pretty walk—it's a slice of Cape Cod history! Built in 1875, this beloved boardwalk has long been the go-to spot for those wanting to connect with the Cape’s natural beauty. Originally built to give easy access to the beach from town, it’s grown into a true local landmark. Though it was hit hard by a nor'easter in 2022, it’s back better than ever! After a major reconstruction, the boardwalk reopened in August 2024, with all the charm and then some.

The $3.2 million project brought together a whole lot of Cape Codders—residents, town boards, employees, contractors, and voters—making it an extra-special project for the community. And now? The boardwalk is wider, taller, and even has railings running along its entire length. Oh, and there’s a diving platform for those who want to take a leap into the fun!

Features and Accessibility

  • The boardwalk stretches 1,350 feet, giving you plenty of space to soak up those epic views.

  • It's now wider and taller than before, giving you a roomier walk for those fresh air vibes.

  • Railings are added along the entire boardwalk—safety first!

  • Dive right in! The new diving platform is perfect for taking a plunge during high tide.

  • The boardwalk is open 24/7—no need to rush; it's always there when you’re ready for some fun.

Parking and Accessibility

Parking can be a bit tight, but there are still options! For a fee, you can park right at the beach, or if you're lucky enough to be a local with a beach sticker, you're all set. If you're feeling adventurous, park on the quaint main street in town and take a leisurely stroll to the beach. Sure, it’s not ideal if you’re hauling beach toys, but it’s a nice way to enjoy a relaxing walk—and maybe grab a snack in town afterward.

And here’s a fun bonus: in the off-season, dogs are welcome to join you on the boardwalk and beach!

At the end of the boardwalk, you'll find a tidal pool area that’s perfect for little ones and families. Bring your sand buckets and nets for the ultimate beach day! Or, if you’re craving the classic ocean experience, continue over the dune to the wide-open shoreline. It’s a bit rocky, but it’s the quintessential Cape Cod beach day.

Because the boardwalk’s on the northern side of Cape Cod, the water tends to be a bit cooler, thanks to currents from the Arctic. But by August, it warms up nicely—though still cooler than the southern beaches of the Cape, which get that lovely, warmer water.

This is where memories are made, where Cape Cod’s beauty shines, and where every step reminds you just how resilient and awesome the community is.

So whether it's your first visit or you're returning to relive those nostalgic moments, the Sandwich Boardwalk is ready to welcome you! Lace up your walking shoes, take a deep breath of salty air, and get ready to enjoy one of Cape Cod’s most treasured spots.
